One Foundation, many impacts

Since its founding in 1865, HSBC has always been directly involved in the welfare of the communities it serves.

To co-ordinate its extensive community support programmes in the Hong Kong special Administrative Region and mainland China, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation established its own fully registered charitable trust in 1981. This trust - known as the Hongkong Bank Foundation - is funded both by endowment and by ongoing contributions from the Bank.

In recognition of the role that the private sector must play in helping meet the social needs of Hong Kong, the Foundation endeavours to spread its support across the community. Its principal interests are in the areas of education, training, community welfare, and the environment.

Based on these areas, the Foundation also seeks to identify projects and programmes that strengthen social links between mainland China and Hong Kong.

Since its establishment, the Foundation has contributed more than HKD765 million to charitable causes. Based on its donation parameters, the Foundation provides financial support to a wide but often related range of initiatives. For more information about some of these initiatives, please visit our Project Snapshots.

In addition to funding large projects, the Foundation also provides financial assistance for small community projects in Hong Kong through a District Community Programme.

The work of the Foundation is also supported by HSBC staff who - individually and collectively - donate ten thousands of hours of their own time each year to help in the community.
